Progress Report on the Inquiry Into the Death of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo

Detectives have released a progress report detailing ongoing investigations into the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a fatal road traffic accident. The inquiry focuses on events surrounding the accident and vehicles captured on CCTV shortly before the collision.

A team of investigators travelled to Keringet in Kuresoi South, Nakuru County, to trace individuals linked to a white Toyota Probox, registration number KDJ 564E. The vehicle was captured on CCTV footage at Eagol Petrol Station moments after the deceased entered and exited the premises.

Statements recorded by detectives confirmed that the vehicle is registered to Hon. William Mutai, the Member of County Assembly for Keringet Ward and Majority Leader of the Nakuru County Assembly. The vehicle is reportedly managed by his wife.

According to the inquiry, the MCA’s wife allegedly hired out the vehicle on December 11, 2025, to Denis Kipyegon Koech. Koech intended to transport family members to Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to receive their son returning from New Mexico University in the United States.

The family reportedly departed Keringet on December 12, 2025, arriving at JKIA at around 5:00 p.m. After their son’s flight landed at approximately 10:00 p.m. and clearance formalities were completed, they began their return journey shortly after midnight.

While driving back to Keringet, the family stopped at Eagol Petrol Station near Karai to refill wiper fluid due to poor visibility caused by weather conditions. During the stop, they observed the deceased leaving the station and heading toward Nairobi.

Moments later, they reportedly heard a loud bang and witnessed a bus dragging the deceased’s vehicle along the highway. After refilling the wiper fluid, they exited the petrol station and briefly stopped near the accident scene at the request of a station guard.

The witnesses stated that they did not alight from their vehicle but assisted by illuminating the wreckage using their headlights, as the area was dark and few vehicles had arrived. They left the scene once traffic began building up and other motorists arrived.

The family later arrived home at approximately 6:00 a.m., where they learned that the victim of the accident was Hon. Cyrus Jirongo. Detectives have indicated that the veracity of these claims is still under active interrogation.

“The DCI reassures the family, friends, and the people of Kenya that thorough and impartial investigations into this incident are ongoing.”

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations has emphasized that no conclusions have been reached at this stage. Investigators are continuing to analyze CCTV footage, witness statements, and forensic evidence.

Updates on the inquiry are expected as investigations progress, with authorities urging patience and caution against speculation. Further official communication will be issued upon completion of critical investigative stages.

For official updates on national investigations, the public is encouraged to follow verified statements from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations.
